We got the first working version of PyPIV, using Traits UI from Enthought. Please, note this date in your calendars

For this (not yet fully debugged ) version, drop us a line on urapiv@gmail.com and we’d be happy to e-mail it to you. The whole thing is very, very simple:

1. Download Enthought Python Distribution (EPD, currently in beta version) from here http://www.enthought.com/products/epd.php

2. get our PyPIV_Traits_v0001.py file and demo images

3. Double-click the file and it simply WORKS.

Note that EPD will almost fully replace all your needs from Matlab ™ (by Mathworks Inc.) That’s what we are planning to do - porting all the recent developments of URAPIV (http://matlabpiv.sf.net) to Python/Scipy/NumPy/Matplotlib/Traits UI

We added so much functionality during the last weekend sprint on URAPIV_GUI:

1. due to a request of our users at the University of Ben Gurion, Beer Sheva, Israel, we added an option to read MetaMorph TIFF images, using the tiffread function of Francois Nedelec, EMBL, Copyright 1999-2006. [http://www.cytosim.org/other/tiffread.m]
2. we added an option to use RECTANGULAR interrogation windows (64 x 16 pixels, etc.)
3. we added Select Region-of-Interest and Reset Region-of-Interest - smaller windows are available for quick-n-dirty check of your images
4. we added an option (to GUI, lost functionality due to transfer to ETH format of high-speed PIV) to read images named as:
   • bird001a.tif - bird001b.tif
   • bird001_b.tif - bird001_c.tif
   • bird001.tif, bird002.tif, bird00x.tif
5. New look:

We got some bug reports from our users of the Python version after they moved to Python 2.4, scipy 0.5.3 and numpy 1.0+ versions. After a short check we suggest you to update the pyPIV source file to the current version, available at SourceForge.NET:

Well, we did it ourselves, but still it’s nice to note. Look mostly at other projects - we support the open-source, free-for-everyone platform of NumPy/SciPy and we’ll promote PyPIV (or should we call it PIVPy?) as much as we can.

Dear users of URAPIV, PyPIV and just readers. We apologize for inactivity, but it is simply due to time constraints. Those of you who wrote an email noticed that we:

a) replied within a day or two

b) helped with any problem you had

c) supported your downloading/running/evaluating problems

The blog inactivity for you means only one things - it’s good - we get too many questions, e-mails and downloading counter is crunching almost every day

We got downloads from Argonne National Laboratory, Penn State, Michigan, Georgia Tech and so on and so on. Not mentioning that Tel Aviv University is now overwhelmed by PIV applicatons and URAPIV is one of the main tools there

Look at Technology Innovation Awards 2006 - about half of the innovations are related in this or another way to fluid mechanics. For example, this I like most:

In addition to the XPIV video clip (maybe we should call it XXXPIV, in order to increase our traffic :-)) we uploaded some old animation that was found on one of the NASA sites but unfortunately disappeared from the web. We use it in our courses and it’s very good animation, showing in quite comprehensive way the Particle Image Velocimetry principle. Enjoy.
